Session 12 Blog Post

In the article The next 25 years?: future scenarios and future directions for education and technology, Facer & Sandford describe three future worlds. As far as I am concerned, “Trust Yourself” is the one I agree most.

In a highly individualized world, people will get used to taking online courses anytime and everywhere. With over diverse learning resources, it is necessary for the learners to build a personalized education system and have paid mentors during the lifelong study. "Informed Choice" and "Independent consumer" are the two educational systems under this environment. Nevertheless, "trust yourself" does not mean there is no sharing in the future. As a typical factor of social media nowadays, sharing will still be an important method for people to acquire information and learn from others. To some extent, sharing makes it possible to learn new things individually as everyone can become your teacher in their area of expertise.

From my perspective, in the year 2042, big data will be more accessible and widely utilized in the education systems. Taking online courses as an instance, scholars will use the online data of the students’ learning behaviors to find the inner connections between different studying methods. In addition, more intelligent screens, wearable devices and VR/AR devices will be used in the classroom. According to the students’ reflections (i.e. emotional fluctuation, click rate, standing time…) to specific teaching content, teachers can adjust their teaching method at any time. Based on the analysis of the big data, it is also easier for educational experts to make appropriate long-term teaching decisions and formulate personalized management. As for the students, using a digital learning system to complete their homework will help them improve learning efficiency as the system will intelligently design most suitable practice for them based on advanced data analysis.
